Road tax on lorries has been reduced from a maximum €5,195 to €900 in the Budget.
This move brings the Republic of Ireland in line with the UK, including Northern Ireland, where hauliers pay just €900 to tax a lorry which would usually cost €4,200 here.
The reduction has been welcomed by Verona Murphy president of the Irish Road Haulage Association who said it was vital to Ireland’s export industry.
Large numbers of hauliers previously based in the Republic had moved to Northern Ireland in recent years to cut costs. Government intervention was welcomed as many were wary that this trend could harm the haulage industry here.
