The Government plans to expand their €1bn rural broadband network to 170,000 homes and businesses.
This broadband service is expected to cover over 900,000 locations and serve about half of the Irish population. This service will provide speeds of 30mbs to users throughout the country.
They expect to begin the National Broadband Plan in the summer of 2017, which will take around 5 years to complete. This project will cost the State around €500m.
This project is part of a universal service obligation that involves households having a legal right to accessible broadband.
