Hundreds of jobs could be at risk in Athlone and Dublin if Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson goes ahead with its plans to lay of thousands of staff globally.
If plans go ahead the job cuts are due to happen this summer. The giant firm is considering further cost cuts due to slowing markets.
Ericsson is one of Europe’s biggest technology companies hiring around 1,400 in Ireland alone. The hundreds of highly skilled roles in Athlone in particular make it a hugely important regional employer.
Government sources expressed concern about the prospect of redundancies but stressed that there has no indication that such job losses are on the cards.
