Simon Coveney (pictured), TD, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, will present the final lecture in the “Grand Challenges for Global Agriculture and Food” Teagasc & RDS lecture series on Tuesday 1st July 2014.

Lecture 6: “Ireland’s Response to Global Grand Challenges in Agriculture and Food”
The recent rises in food prices have brought increasing focus to the importance of global food security and the need to ensure a sustainable food supply for all. Bad weather conditions, including drought, the effects of rising energy costs, and fundamental long-term changes in the demand for food, particularly in developing countries, have placed increasing pressure on global food supplies. These events have shown that food security cannot be taken for granted. Through our capacity in research and knowledge transfer, our involvement in key international organisations, and our overseas aid programme, Ireland can play an important role in responding to the growing challenge of sustainably feeding an increasing global population.
Simon Coveney holds a B.Sc. in Agriculture and Land Management from The Royal Agriculture College, Gloucestershire. He was first elected to the Dáil in 1998 and was appointed as Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine on March 9th 2011. Mr Coveney was elected to the European Parliament in 2004 and was a member of the EPP-ED group. He was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee. He was also a substitute member on the Fisheries Committee. Mr Coveney was the author of the European Parliament’s Annual Report on Human Rights in the World for the year 2004 and again for 2006.
